The man suspected of hijacking a Mexican commercial airliner was a minister who believed that the date, 9/9/9, which is 666 upside down, was a divine sign.666 is just a number
The suspect, 44-year-old Josmar Flores Pereira, a former drug addict, told authorities that he hijacked the plane so he could warn people of an earthquake. He said that the date, September 9, 2009 (9/9/9), held a special meaning.
"He said that because of that divine reference, he wanted to alert Mexico City of an earthquake," Mexico's secretary for public safety, Genaro Garcia Luna, told reporters.
Garcia said that the suspect, a native of Boliva, had gone to Cancun the week before to attend a religious meeting.
As Mexican police paraded Flores in front of News media, he smiled and said; "Christ is coming soon".
He told reporters that he had attached some colored lights to a can, and that there was no real bomb on board Flight 576.
The AeroMexico Boeing 737 carrying 104 passengers, was hijacked on Wedsneday shortly after departing from the resort town of Cancun. The suspect had threatened to blow the plane up unless he could speak to President Felipe Calderon, and told flight attendents that there were two more hijackers on the plane.
The ordeal lasted just over an hour, and ended peacefully.
Some Christian people believe that the number 666, which appears in modern versions of the Book of Revelations (part of the Christian Bible), is the Number of the Beast (Satan a.k.a the Devil).
But recent discoveries of third century manuscripts of Revelation show that the number actually reads as 616.
Most scholars contend that the number 666 is a merely a code in Hebrew numerology for the Roman Emperor, Nero.
